B.Sc. (Hons) Biotechnology is a three-year undergraduate programme offering a strong foundation of biotechnological concepts. Biotechnologists engineer these living cells to produce a particular product of improved quality. Biotechnology is the exploitation of natural resources at the microbial and molecular level to produce a product of improved quality for the benefit of mankind. The work Biotechnologists do is in a variety of sectors eg. Agriculture, pharmaceuticals, medicine, environment etc.
The programme prepares students with an analytical mindset to obtain valued solutions to harness the quality of life through major advances in health and medicine. The study module of biotechnology comprises genetics, cell biology, biomolecules, plant and animal tissue culture, immunology microbiology and chemistry. The broad area of study involves research in biological systems and the application of technology to create innovative products to advance life. Most jobs in Biotechnology are research-based and most biotechnologists are employed in research and development departments of institutions and industries involved in biotechnological work. Biotechnologists work extensively in the production departments of these industries. Graduates in this discipline significantly contribute to research and development to improve people s lives and health.
