A graduate, advanced or master’s degree is the next step. A Master of Arts (M.A.) degree usually takes about two additional years to earn, and it often requires students to perform original research and write a thesis. Holding a master’s degree can make job seekers more competitive in their field or lead to increased salaries. For some positions, such as school administrator, librarian and clinical psychologist, a graduate degree is a necessity.
