Training Information Overview
Training Description
Bioinformatics is a rapidly growing field, and expertise in computational biology can provide students with an advantage in biological and biomedical research. This training is designed to provide hands-on exposure to advanced bioinformatics, drug designing and molecular modelling.
The workshop aims to build participants’ interest, practical skills and confidence in carrying out bioinformatics analyses. Participants will work with relevant tools, perform practical exercises and record their observations. The training will also introduce how computational methods can support research across a range of scientific fields.
Who Should Attend?
B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. students, faculty members from life sciences streams, and participants from other disciplines who are interested in research are welcome.
Workshop Objectives
The workshop aims to equip participants with essential bioinformatics skills and introduce them to the use of computational tools for biological data analysis and research.
- Understand advanced concepts: Introduce bioinformatics and drug-designing concepts used in biological research.
- Develop practical skills: Provide experience using computational tools and software for biological data analysis.
- Build data-analysis knowledge: Improve understanding of techniques such as sequence alignment and homology modelling.
- Explore real-world applications: Demonstrate computational biology applications in personalised medicine, drug discovery and disease modelling.
- Encourage collaboration: Promote cross-disciplinary learning across biology, mathematics, computer science and statistics.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain core bioinformatics concepts and the relationship between biological systems and computational techniques.
- Use bioinformatics tools and software to analyse genetic, proteomic and transcriptomic data.
- Interpret biological data in the context of real-world problems and present findings using suitable tools and visualisations.
- Describe how bioinformatics contributes to genomics, biotechnology and medicine.
- Collaborate on bioinformatics projects and apply interdisciplinary problem-solving skills.
- Gain practical exposure to sequence analysis, structural bioinformatics and data visualisation.
- Identify further study and career pathways in bioinformatics and related interdisciplinary fields.
